Transport Kayaks From Cottage Ontario: Transporting Kayaks, Canoes and Paddleboards Home After Cottage Season

Use a cargo van or pickup truck with a rack or extended bed, load boats hull-down with padding, and strap them at two points with a bow and stern line. If you do not have a suitable vehicle, a hauling driver can move the whole fleet in one trip.

Know What You Are Moving

| Gear | Typical length | Typical weight | |---|---|---| | Recreational kayak | 9 to 12 ft | 40 to 60 lb | | Touring kayak | 14 to 17 ft | 55 to 70 lb | | Canoe | 15 to 17 ft | 55 to 80 lb | | Inflatable paddleboard | 10 to 12 ft | 20 to 30 lb |

Loading Rules That Protect Your Gear and Your Licence

- Secure at two points with cam straps, never ratchet straps on thin hulls - Tie bow and stern lines to the vehicle frame - Flag any load extending more than one metre past the rear of the vehicle - Twist straps once to stop humming at highway speeds

When a Van Beats a Roof Rack

For four or more boats, a cargo van or pickup truck is safer and quicker than juggling a roof rack. GoGedit drivers regularly move water sports gear along with patio furniture and life jackets in a single run from Muskoka, Haliburton and the Kawarthas to the GTA.
